Muhlenberg Students Chosen as Winners in Art Competition

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (03/13/15) – Muhlenberg County Public Libraries and the Muhlenberg Arts Council are excited about the incredible response to the Young Artist Showcase now on display at Thistle Cottage.

Although the snow and subsequent school closures created a problem for some schools in getting their pieces submitted for inclusion in the show, more than 150 pieces of artwork were submitted by Muhlenberg art teachers at the elementary and middle school levels. Each teacher was allowed to submit up to 10 pieces per grade. Pieces were then hung in the art gallery at Muhlenberg County Public Libraries’ Thistle Cottage and judged by county high school art teachers. Three winners were selected from each grade level.

Winners included:

• Kindergarten – first place Madden Jones (Bremen Elementary School); second place Toniann Vincent (Bremen Elementary School); third place McKaila Monroe (Bremen Elementary School)

• First grade – first place Briley Randolph (Bremen Elementary School); second place Jackson Wood (Bremen Elementary School); third place Lilli Darr (Bremen Elementary School)

• Second grade – first place Sarod Bard (Greenville Elementary School); second place Kindell Divine (Bremen Elementary School); third place Emily Hendricks (Bremen Elementary School)

• Third grade – first place Cadence Stone (Bremen Elementary School); second place Isaac Whitaker (Longest Elementary School); third place Emerson Staley (Longest Elementary School)

• Fourth grade – first place Kylee Higgins (Greenville Elementary School); second place Hunter Dickerson (Bremen Elementary School); third place Emma Pharis (Bremen Elementary School)

• Eighth grade – first place Kristal Coffman (South Middle School); second place Kyleigh Laster (South Middle School); third place Kyndal Bard (South Middle School)

Over 250 people showed up for an open house held on March 9th to view the artwork on display. Because of the overwhelming positive response to the show and open house, the library and Arts Council plan to make the event an annual one to take place every March.

Students’ art will remain on display at Thistle Cottage through the end of the month, at which point it will be replaced by high school students’ artwork for an exhibit through the month of April. An open house for that exhibit will be held April 16 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Thistle Cottage is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit may be viewed any time during normal business hours.
